Is RTL8710AF obsolete / EOL?

Postby Sam » Sat Mar 18, 2017 3:01 am

Just comming from the Realtek official web site: http://www.realtek.com/products/productsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=33&PFid=45&Level=4&Conn=3 and RTL8710AF is not there anymore.
Instead there is another chip RTL8710BN, which is different from what I remember the specs for RTL8710AF were:

RTL8710AF RTL8710BN
Cortex M3 Cortex M4
1 MB Flash - no embedded flash

So instead of M3, you'll get M4, but need to put extra external flash and will have 6 less IO pins that the flash will occupy in QI mode :(

The RTL8711AF chip is still listed there, but my guess is that the reason Realtek abandon RTL8710AF is some sort of problem with embedded flash, so if this is true than RTL8711AF will have the same destiny :(

Does anybody have any more info regarding this?

My guess is that the 8710AF was basically planned as a lesser binning of the 8711AF. The specs are almost identical and all the supposed 8710AF I have seen so far had no problems running at 166MHz, could generate PWM output and operate two SPI interfaces. So the 8710AF may have never existed at all.

@tidklaas,good point. most likely, RTL8710AF is absolutely the same hardware as RTL8711AF and only data written in the Calibration Data segment (together with the bootloader) determines whether it boots into 83MHz or 166MHz by settings a register on the CPU's PLL.

I'm trying to clarify this with Realtek.
No success so far - first email I sent to Support there returns with:

This guys from Realtek dont look quite "supportive" :( , but will give it another try with the Sales department ;)
