General information and links

Postby dpape » Fri Jul 29, 2016 11:58 pm

This topic will contain all currently available information about the RTL8710 chip. What we already know:

  • Package: QFN-48 (6 x 6 mm)
  • CPU: ARM Cortex M3 @ 166MHz
  • RAM: 48KiB available for user firmware
  • Flash: 1MiB on-chip
  • WiFi: 802.11 g/n (up to 150 Mbps) 1x1
  • GPIO: Up to 21 GPIO pins
  • I²C: Up to 3 I²C ports
  • PCM: Up to 2
  • PWM: Up to 4 PWM ports
  • UART: 1 high speed, 1 low speed
  • Power requirements: 80mA @ 3.0 to 3.6V
  • Temperature range: -40°C to + 125°C
  • Certifications (not yet confirmed): FCC/CE/TELEC/SRRC/WiFi Alliance

The chip can be debugged trough micro-USB using CMSIS DAP or JLINK.

Currently the following links contain some info, temust yet be categorized:

Update 01/08/2016: a module datasheet was found. Unfortunately it's in Chinese. Maybe someone can translate it? I have added it to the attachments.

As far as I understand (when reading the chinese datasheet), there are 2 high-speed UARTs and 1 low-speed UART.
In addition to the above mentioned interfaces:
1 x I2S: 4kHz ... 88.2kHz audio
1 x SDIO (4-lane, so it's quite fast)
2 x SPI
1 x JTAG (and since it's a Cortex-M3, I would expect/presume it also has SWD on the TMS and TCK pins plus debug output on TDO).
The chinese datasheet mentions 1MB Flash memory and 512K RAM - I expect that it supports up to 512K RAM but this might not be on-board RAM.
It also speaks about 48kB RAM, which I would expect to be the on-chip SRAM.

The RTL-01 modules can be purchased on eBay from both e_goto and from chipworld.
Contact them directly if you don't see the RTL-01 in their stores.

Update:

I just received documentation from the manufacturer of RTL-00 and RTL-01.
This is the information I got on the modules:
1: They're not running at 166MHz, but on 83MHz, because the RTL8710 is 83 MHz (the RTL8711 is 166 MHz, but is not used on those modules)
2: There are 2 high-speed UARTs and 1 standard-speed UART.
3: It seems that there's 1MB ROM, 512KB RAM and 1MB Flash memory.
4: SDIO is available as slave.
5: There are 2 SPI interfaces available.
6: I2S is available
7: 3 x I2C are available.

The ROM contains UART drivers and some functions that might be useful. Using these functions could save space in Flash and RAM

I've attached the english datasheet and a jpeg file, which might be helpful for getting started for english-speaking people.

@pacman Thats some great information. Interesting to know the RTL8710AF runs on 83MHz, maybe it can be overclocked, it will be the same silicon anyway I thing. I'l adapt the head post to the new information soon.

Found this somewhere on the web. Not much new information, though. There is a memory map for all the peripherals, but it lacks detailed register descriptions.

hello i wand to buy from ebau some modules
but i cand find anyware reference wirinig

im design a board and i wand to design in part of my board wifi conection and i want to try tit module

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RTL8710-WiFi-Wi ... 1692219185

but knowne provides
1. full dimentions to create library to my pcb design software
2. important pins (main uart firmware uart, if not use the main, spesific pins that must change the state for operation or firmware, etc)
3. a simple wiring example to well known arduino

please if someone have this info post because i have 2 days to finish my pcb and i wad to add this module, without have this module actualy in my hands this time...

thnaks

Hello Lios,

Nice to hear you are actually building a PCB with this module. I think you can find most information in the datasheet linked at the top download/file.php?id=3

I'm currently still waiting on the arrival of my modules. As soon as I receive them I will post some more information and test data.

Are you willing to showcase your project in the projects forum, I'm curious to see it :)

Kind regards,
Daan

I got mine yesterday. I have not played with it yet, but you can see the pin assignment on the back -> https://plus.google.com/u/0/11071956269 ... u6Sqxg1wJD

The pins are also documented in some documents provided in the forums here.

Got mine today. Also with pinout printed on the back, but not the same pinout...

Hello Joep,

That's intereseting, it seems you have a faster version I heard of, the RTL8711 with NFC and 166MHz clock. Where did you buy it from?

Thank you for sharing on the forum,
Kind regards,
Daan
